46° Halo

The 46 degree halo is similar in appearance to the 22 degree halo except that it is much larger and therefore also called the large halo. It occurs far less frequently than the 22 degree halo and because of its large size is seldom seen as a complete circle.
The 46 degree halo can have an intensity only about one-tenth of that of the 22 degree halo. An observer might glimpse a piece of this giant ring a few times a year. The 46 degree halo is formed by refraction in perpendicular crystal faces.
